Baking simplified。。。。I liked that this cookbook took only the essential high quality ingredients, the bare minimum of steps to create cookies, pies, cakes and bars with very little effort。 You can do this。 You can mix it in a stand, with a hand mixer or by hand。 Great recipes, made easy to make。 Recommend。

Every year around the holidays we have a cookie bake, so I scour the internet in hopes of finding cookie recipes that are different and not the usual thumbprint or pinwheel varieties, This book has those unique recipes that I’ve been looking for。 The photographs of the actual bakes are detailed and make your mouth water。 I loved the added photos of vintage utensils, cookie jars and bakeware。 As a collector of cookbooks I will most definitely be purchasing this one when it comes out。 Thank you to Every year around the holidays we have a cookie bake, so I scour the internet in hopes of finding cookie recipes that are different and not the usual thumbprint or pinwheel varieties, This book has those unique recipes that I’ve been looking for。 The photographs of the actual bakes are detailed and make your mouth water。 I loved the added photos of vintage utensils, cookie jars and bakeware。 As a collector of cookbooks I will most definitely be purchasing this one when it comes out。 Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for the eARC。 。。。more

Thank you, NetGalley, for this ARC!First off, I’d like to say that the cover and title of this cookbook immediately caught my eye。 You can definitely tell it is a baking book! I loved the intro/memoir portions。 As a Chrisitan, I was so glad to see Danielle Kartes displaying her faith through her God-given talents, baking and writing。 During the recipe introductions, Kartes shares stories, many of them from her childhood。 There is a large emphasis on homestyle, simple bakes。 Many times, the book reads like a community cookbook or Southern Living Magazine。 The book is organized into 5 sections: Cookies; Puddings, Possets, and Panna Cotta; Bars and Bakes; Pies Galettes; and Cakes。 I would recommend this book to beginner bakers who are trying to get the basics down。 Most of the book is classics, so there aren’t too many adventurous recipes。 I tried Gloria’s Chocolate Drops with Cream Cheese Glaze, which were very tasty! However, it left me wishing for a touch more, like a splash of bourbon or chopped nuts。 The instructions were easy to follow if you know your way around the kitchen, but a little vague for inexperienced bakers。 The only warning I would give is for Kindle readers。 The change in format from physical book to e-book is not entirely seamless, making the book hard to follow at times。 Otherwise, this is a perfect, simple book for no-fuss home bakers。 。。。more

I did really enjoy some of the recipes in this book。 The author's method seemed practical and made sense to me。 I did not realize going in just how much of the written content around the recipes was going to be religious in nature, though。 Sure, you should absolutely be able to write what you want in your own book, but that is a thing now stuck in my head--came in expecting cookies, got exhortations to pray。 But cookies too。 Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC。 I did really enjoy some of the recipes in this book。 The author's method seemed practical and made sense to me。 I did not realize going in just how much of the written content around the recipes was going to be religious in nature, though。 Sure, you should absolutely be able to write what you want in your own book, but that is a thing now stuck in my head--came in expecting cookies, got exhortations to pray。 But cookies too。 Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC。 。。。more

Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy is a cookbook that attempts to make baking easier and less messy with many one bowl recipes。 None of the recipes are difficult and they are meant to make baking fun。 There are a lot of good flavor combinations that I've marked for future use。 I didn't like the preachy commentary throughout the book as I wasn't expecting it to have as much religion in it as it did since it wasn't mentioned in the summary。 In order to accurately review the cookbook, I felt like I needed t Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy is a cookbook that attempts to make baking easier and less messy with many one bowl recipes。 None of the recipes are difficult and they are meant to make baking fun。 There are a lot of good flavor combinations that I've marked for future use。 I didn't like the preachy commentary throughout the book as I wasn't expecting it to have as much religion in it as it did since it wasn't mentioned in the summary。 In order to accurately review the cookbook, I felt like I needed to make at least one recipe out of it first。 The recipe that caught my eye that I already had all of the ingredients for was the Sticky Marshmallow Toffee Cookies with Black Hawaiian Sea Salt。 I am a frequent baker and it already brings me joy, even when I dirty up tons of dishes。 I have found my own shortcuts and preferences throughout my years of baking, but I read through her cookbook to be true to her recipes (no matter how much some people hate to admit it, baking - and cooking - are scientific; certain combinations of ingredients make things happen)。 Since she specifically says you can swap 1-1 gluten free flour for any all-purpose flour in the book, our biggest variance for this recipe is that I prefer to use unsalted butter。 To combat the difference, I added extra salt (1/2 tsp since it calls for 1 c of butter)。 The other small issue was that I don't like my cookies loaded with toppings so I decreased the amount of chocolate chips and marshmallows slightly (less than 1/2 c each)。 Personally, I didn't find these cookies to be as good as I was expecting。 My household felt that they tasted too floury, but my neighbors and coworkers loved them。 I also felt like they would be elevated simply by browning the butter。 I'm going to make them again with my adaptions and see if I like them better (and give the taste testers another trial)。 While there are a lot of recipes in the book that intrigue me, I think that if you are a seasoned baker, you can improvise to make the recipe your own。 For me, that may mean an extra dirty dish, but it's worth it。Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy。 。。。more
